Kitten Whisker Alert!

When Baby Lotus was a baby, he got his little nose in so many places that his whiskers were always broken. He was more than a year old before he finally grew a proper set of whiskers. Sprocket seems to be headed in the same direction. Since this photo was taken, Sprocket has broken at least two more on the other side.

Beautiful Lotus Whiskers:

It is a well known principle of feline fashion that floofiness must be directly proportional to whisker length.

Some kitties decide to grow two-tone whiskers. If done right (and kitties always do it right), it can be quite attractive. Sometimes dust bunnies stop to admire the magnificent Lotus whiskers and the next thing they know, they’re sharing a tummy with crunchable bugses.

You see the spot just under his chin and above his legs – that’s a snorgle-spot. Try it sometime.

This was taken before Sprocket broke his whiskers. The doughnut helped to protect them.

When we get some decent light again, I will take some comparison photos.

  1. Aloha! I really enjoy reading about tiny Sprocket and the rest of the Miaos, so I’ve chosen you for the Versatile Blogger Award. For the details, see my blog entry http://pedrothecat.com/2011/09/27/my-first-award/. Congrats!

Woohoo! You won the VBA! Congrats, Little M and all the Miaos!

Love the whisker piskers! Can’t wait to see Sprocket’s after pics!

  3. What beautiful photos! But as my mother used to say when I broke a fingernail, whiskers can always grow back. Time and kittenhood don’t, so I hope Sprocket enjoys playing and exploring his home. Just don’t put your head in any tight little holes, Sprocket hun!

That happened to Ping when he was a baby. That’s how he got a white spot on his orange head! I should re-tell that story (with pictures) again – it has been a while. In short, he got his head stuck in a washing machine. Chinese washing machines had these large holes at the bottom, just large enough to fit a kitten head but not large enough for the kitten to get out. We were so worried. It took more than an hour, but finally, my mother used some White Cat brand dish detergent to soap up his neck and managed to extract him, except for a tiny fur-spot on his head.

  4. Wheeskers! They’re so darn cute!

I am amazed at some of the positions you had to have gotten in to the snap some of these shots….all the while not disturbing the intended Miao. I love the whisker pictures and accompanied story.

That last photo of Lotus, he looks very Dali-esque.

    Wonderful whiskers photos!

I was just noticing that Lotus’s whiskers go up, while Sprocket’s go down. Interesting difference. I must study the other Miaos more carefully and see if they are up-whiskers or down-whiskers.

Fascinating! In all my years of whisker studies, I had never noted this very significant difference. This phenomenon deserves much greater attention.

Chun seems to have down-whiskers. Tashi possibly as well. This is going to be a major project, I can tell.
