flower identification help, please!

When I cleared a bunch of weeds from my backyard (though only a small fraction of the total), I discovered these lovely flowers blooming behind some very large bush-like weeds. Perhaps these flowers were planted here intentionally once-upon-a-time. They are quite sleepy, only being open for a few hours each day, and less on overcast days. We have had so many cloudy, rainy days that it was hard to finally get a picture of them. Can anyone tell me what they are? I should have taken a picture of the whole plant – these are just the flowers.

I don’t know the flower, but I’m impressed that it turned up in your favorite color.

That twist of blue filament in the middle is strikingly beautiful! But I’ve never seen a flower like it. See if you can find something on a flower ident. website.

great suggestion! I looked on a couple websites and now I’m thinking it is some kind of spiderwort.

I’m hoping that Lauri will be able to give the definitive answer. ๐Ÿ™‚

I can’t tell from your pics how large (or small) the flowers are but I think this might be it.

  5. e2thec says:

they look similar to day lilies… but that’s just a wild guess.

  6. Lauri says:

It’s nothing I have ever seen before! I would have guessed Trillium, like HG, but I knew that wasn’t it. It is SO pretty! Hooray for Drude and her google-fu!
    A spiderwort….never heard of it!

Well, I can see that I shall now have to go in search of Spiderworts! ๐Ÿ™‚

I wonder if it had been planted here deliberately or if it just grew out of its own accord. It’s too pretty to be a weed and I’m definitely keeping it. I have to admit, though, that weeding around stuff can be difficult, especially since so many of the weeds I have are these woody-stemmed mini-trees. Their roots are big and pulling them up upsets everything around them.

Today was the first nice day we’ve had in a while, and I could have gotten so much done in the yard, but I did nothing! I got a late start to my day, went running, and then after that did nothing but read and snack. *sigh* Tomorrow is another day!

  8. I have these also but mine are really deep blue. I think it is from the Wandering Jew family. They come in many flower and leaf colors. You can break pieces off and stand in a glass of water and new roots will form new plants.
